Top 10 March 19

Hi and welcome to another List by me!
Had Gina Rossi over for dinner this week and she asked me why i stopped posting personal intro list so in her honor i brought it back for as long as i can be asked. My list this week is about my favorite tracks at the moment and got 10 (or at least 9) sparkling spring tunes, so check them out and create your own little spring mix...

Anyhow, Enjoy the list.
Cheers.
Mr. J.

1. Christina Empedocles

JuxtaPoz on Christian:
I dig how Christina Empedocles' source material is in essence, her work. Christina folds and pins images, creating sculptural pieces and then those pieces become paintings and drawings as well. Her work to me is like the technique and process version of M.C. Escher, if you catch my drift. However, clearly way more refined and beautiful. I recently asked Christina to tell me about her choice in media and her thoughts behind her work:

The wax pencil has a different feel to me than graphite or charcoal, and in a way blends more like oil paint, (the medium I was trained in), while giving me more control and precision. When I draw pictures of pictures I am pointing out the disconnect between myself and the subject. [I'm] trying to show that my relationship to nature has become a relationship to the images of nature. In the same way portraits function for me as a way to show how my relationship to history has become a collection of trinkets.

2. Mike Piscitelli

Spawned from the San Fernando Valley, Mike Piscitelli dropped out of ninth grade to pursue skateboarding, hardcore music and teenage girls. He ended up working as an assistant on porn films, which spurred his interest in photography and film. At age eighteen he moved to New York and proceeded to shoot editorials for Dazed & Confused, Another and i-D magazine. He went on to direct the SoCal Summer Campaign for MTV, which earned him a coveted Art Directors Club Award. In 2003, he moved back to Los Angeles to focus on film work and surfing. He soon found himself directing music videos for Iggy Pop, John Frusciante, Linkin Park and The Walkmen, among others. In 2006 he won Pitchfork Media's "Video of the Year" for Bonnie "prince" Billy and Matt Sweeny's "Superwolf"; in 2007 he was voted one of Print magazine's New Visual Artist. He is currently finishing work on a feature length documentary about Ozzy Osbourne, as well as shooting various editorial, advertising and personal projects.

3. Tiffany Bozic

Tiffany Bozic has spent the majority of her life living with and observing the intricacies of nature. Having grown up on a farm in Arkansas, she was inspired by the natural world at an early age. Blending her external observations with the internal world has led her to refine a distinct style. Her work often incorporates richly pigmented acrylic paint on solid maple wood panels. She is said to be inspired by John James Audubon and Ernst Haeckel, but dives more deeply into the imaginary and darker aspects of the natural world. Bozic views the making of art as a kind of therapeutic process - a way to make sense of the world, of her relationship to life as it unfolds, of its power over us, and perhaps most importantly, of our power over it. Currently based in San Francisco, California, she has shown in galleries throughout the United States and Europe, and spoken at the 2007 Semi Permanent International Arts and Design Conference in Sydney, Australia. Her artwork has been published in magazines such as Flaunt, Fourteen Hills, and Alarm. Tiffany was recently published on the cover of Coast Magazine, featured in Metamorphosis 2, and In the Land of Retinal Delights, The Juxtapoz Factor from the The Laguna Art Museum in Association with Gingko Press 2008. Tiffany participated in the California Academy of Sciences Artist in Residence program from November 2006-2007.

4. Natural gas commercial

The idea of the film is simple. How to visualize the warmth of natural gas? By the use of the stop motion technic, we see how warmth spreads through the house as knitted wool. A film of TBWA Brussels, directed by Olivier Babinet produced by Lovo Films. Don't forget to check out the making of how we did it!

8. Alexa Meade

Remember that one time you visited a haunted house and you swore the painting’s eyes were following you? Or perhaps you can recall the last time you saw a painting that was so convincing, you couldn’t believe it was a painting? Alexa Meade is an installation artist who bridges that gap. She paints on anything from found objects to live models for her installations.

9. Kozyndan

Kozyndan are Los Angeles based mad scientists. They are working on a secret formula for controlled nuclear fusion, and are creating a line of edible chickens. For fun they like to take long deep breaths and dip their heads into bowls of raspberry jelly and lemon curd. They live indoors and don't paint on walls. The couple also moonlights as freelance illustrators.
